Labor of Love
I'm a Voltes V baby and I never got to know Mazinger Z. Apparently my boyfriend does and I just found out he's close to crazy about Mazinger Z. That gave me a bright idea (well on that day, at least).
I planned on getting him an action figure, but when I asked around for the price, it costs 3K plus for a full-metal Mazinger Z. So I settled for one of those assemble-your-own-robot types that cost half the price of the full-metal action figure. Quite an ambitious project for someone who never tried to assemble robots in the first place.
When I finally got the free time to do it, I opened the box and out came frames of plastic pieces waiting to be linked to each other. I was overwhelmed by the abundance of parts and by the instruction pamphlet. It was unnerving to see how much you'll have to learn to do and you only have one chance to get it right.
My first task was the tiny red plane on the top of his head. The wings had to bend and they were supposed to be interlocked to the center part. So as I was detaching one of the wings from the frame, the joint broke. Blech. It a good thing mom keeps a stash of mighty bond around the house. It saved the plane.
A couple of hours later, I was progressing. Having done the head and the torso, the limbs were next. And these were the harder parts, I had to assemble a firing arm using a spring. The same thing happened when I was detaching the blue shield from the frame, the plastic vibrated as I cut one part and the firing joint fell off. Leaving the plastic fist stuck on the frame. Argh.
After hours of struggling with the parts and thoughts about becoming a masseuse (you had to have strong fingers to lock parts together, gaps between parts should be avoided, else it wouldn't fit into the other parts), I finally finished it!
Looks good for my first attempt at assembling hehe. My only problem after spending hours of labor on it, it's harder to part with it. sigh. I guess this is how a parent feels like. haha.
Anyway, to get over that feeling, I had a photo frenzy and gave it to him after. Yey!
